# Jira

> Send tasks from 3RD to a Jira project as issues, each with its full brief, and keep their status in step. 3RD never deletes anything in Jira.

Connect Jira and you can send tasks from the [Task management](https://docs.get3rd.com/actions/task-management.md) board straight into a Jira project. Each task becomes an issue with its full brief in the description. When a task's status changes on either side, the other side can follow.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The Jira integration is in **Beta**. If you don't see the **Jira** row, it isn't switched on for your organization yet.

## Before you start

* You need **edit access** to the brand in 3RD. View-only members don't see the **Connect** button.
* You connect **per brand**. Each brand links its own Atlassian account.
* 3RD works with **Jira Cloud** sites (your-site.atlassian.net).
* You need a Jira account that can create issues in the project you want them in.

## Connect Jira

**1. Open Integrations**

In 3RD, open **Settings → Integrations** for the brand. Jira is under **Task management**. You can also click **Integrations** on the Task management board.

**2. Click Connect**

In the **Jira** row, click **Connect**. Sign in to your Atlassian account and allow 3RD access to Jira.

**3. Check it's connected**

Back in 3RD, the row shows **Connected** and the account you linked. If you cancel in Atlassian, nothing is connected and the row says so.

## Choose where issues go

Open the **⋯** menu in the Jira row and click **Sync settings**. On the Task management board, click the **Jira** button instead. The **How 3RD works with Jira** window opens.

* **Project**: the project the **Send** window opens on.
* **Issue type**: the issue type these choices are for. Each issue type can have its own workflow.
* **To do**, **In progress**, **Done**: the Jira status an issue moves to for each status.

You don't have to set anything for status to sync. Until you choose, each status uses the workflow's first status in the matching category (To Do, In Progress, Done), shown as **Project default**. Each project and issue type keeps its own choices. Click **Save** when you're done.

## Send tasks to Jira

**1. Select tasks**

On the Task management board, tick the box on each task you want to send. The box shows when you hover over a card.

**2. Click Send to Jira**

In the bar that appears, click **Send to Jira**.

**3. Pick the project and issue type**

Choose the **Project** and the **Issue type**, then click **Send**.

3RD lists only the issue types it can create from a task: not sub-tasks, and none that need more fields filled in than a summary and a description. **Task** comes first when the project has it.

Jira starts every new issue in its workflow's first status. If the task's status goes to a different Jira status, 3RD moves the issue there right after creating it.

3RD shows how many tasks it sent. Each issue gets:

| In Jira | From 3RD |
| - | - |
| **Summary** | The task's title |
| **Description** | A link back to the task in 3RD, its area and impact, why it matters, and the steps to take |

A task that's already in that project isn't sent twice. Sent tasks show a small Jira icon on their card in 3RD. Click it to open the issue in Jira.

## Keep status in step

**From 3RD to Jira.** When you change the status of a sent task in 3RD, 3RD asks **Update Jira too?** Click **Update Jira** to move the issue to the status for its new status, or **Not now** to leave it.

3RD moves an issue with your workflow's own transitions. If the workflow has no step straight to that status, or the step asks for more details, the issue stays where it is and 3RD tells you why.

**From Jira to 3RD.** When you move a sent issue to a status that one status goes to, the task in 3RD moves to that status. A status matched to more than one status changes nothing.

The newest change wins, whichever side made it.

## What 3RD never does

3RD only creates issues and moves the issues it sent through your workflow's transitions. It never:

* deletes anything in Jira
* edits an issue's summary, description or any other field
* changes a project, workflow, issue type, user or permission
* touches an issue that was moved to another project

## Disconnect

Open the **⋯** menu in the Jira row and click **Disconnect**, then confirm. You can also click **Disconnect** in the **How 3RD works with Jira** window.

3RD stops sending anything to Jira. Issues already in Jira stay where they are.

## Troubleshooting

| You see | What to do |
| - | - |
| **Reconnect needed** on the Jira row | Jira stopped accepting the connection. Click **Reconnect**. |
| **Connect Jira under Settings, Integrations to send these briefs there.** | The brand isn't connected yet. Follow [Connect Jira](#connect-jira). |
| **Sent to Jira, but not every issue could move to the status for its task** | The issues were created in the workflow's first status. Move them in Jira. |
| **The Jira workflow has no step straight to that status, so the issue stayed where it is.** | Move the issue in Jira, or pick a status your workflow can reach in one step in **Sync settings**. |
| **The Jira workflow asks for more details to make that move, so the issue stayed where it is.** | Make the move in Jira, where you can fill in the details. |
| **The workflow has no Jira status for this status, so no issue moved.** | Pick a status for it in **Sync settings**. |
| An issue type is missing from the list | It's a sub-task type, or it needs more fields than 3RD fills in. Pick another type. |
| **Only people who can edit this brand can change how it works with Jira.** | You have view-only access. Ask someone with edit access. |
