# WordPress

> Send Content Agent articles into your WordPress site as draft posts, per brand. 3RD never publishes.

Connect WordPress and the [Content Agent](https://docs.get3rd.com/actions/content-agent.md) can send a finished article straight into your WordPress site as a **draft**. It opens in the block editor as ordinary blocks, with headings, lists, links, tables and images. Your team reviews the draft in WordPress and publishes it there.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The WordPress integration is in **Beta**. Connect it per brand; nothing is shared across brands.

## Before you start

* Your organization needs an **active 3RD subscription** with the Content Agent.
* You need **edit access** to the brand in 3RD. View-only members don't see the **Connect** button.
* You connect **per brand**. Each brand links its own WordPress site.
* The site is a **self-hosted WordPress** site, version 5.6 or later, reached over **https**. It needs to run at the root of its address, such as `https://www.example.com`.
* You need a WordPress account with the **Author**, **Editor** or **Administrator** role. 3RD writes posts and uploads images as this account.
* **Application Passwords** must be turned on. Some hosts and security plugins turn them off. If you can't find them, ask whoever looks after your site.

## Connect WordPress

**1. Open Integrations**

In 3RD, open **Settings → Integrations** for the brand.

**2. Click Connect**

In the **WordPress** row, click **Connect**. The **Connect WordPress** window opens. Type your **Site address**, such as `https://www.example.com`, and click **Open this page in WordPress** to jump to the right place in your WordPress admin.

**3. Make an application password**

In WordPress, go to **Users**, then **Profile**. Scroll down to **Application Passwords**, type `3RD` as the name and click **Add New Application Password**. Copy the password WordPress shows. It is shown only once.

**4. Paste your details**

Back in 3RD, click **Next**. Check the **Site address**, enter your **WordPress username** (the one you log in with) and paste the **Application password**. This is the 24-character password from Application Passwords, not your login password. Spaces are fine. Click **Connect**.

**5. Choose where pieces go**

3RD checks the details with your site, then the **Where drafts go** window opens by itself. Pick a **Post type** and click **Save**.

If you already have your details, click **I already have my details** to go straight to the fields.

## Choose where pieces go

Drafts go to **Posts** until you choose otherwise. The **Post type** list shows only the types the connected account can create, such as **Posts**, **Pages** or a type a plugin adds.

3RD fills these fields in each new draft:

| In WordPress | From 3RD |
| - | - |
| **Title** | The article's opening heading, or the piece title when the article has none |
| **Slug** | The address you set when pushing (the last part, if it has several) |
| **Content** | The article, as blocks |
| **Excerpt** | The article's first paragraph |

Images are uploaded to your **Media Library**. An image that can't be copied stays a link to its original address, and 3RD tells you how many.

To change the post type later, open the **⋯** menu in the WordPress row and click **Choose where pieces go**. The next push of an article makes a new draft in the new post type.

## Push an article to WordPress

**1. Open the article**

In the Content Agent, open a new article (not an optimization of an existing page).

**2. Send it as a draft**

Click **Push to WordPress**. If the brand has more than one CMS connected, the button says **Push to CMS** and you pick **WordPress** in the window. Check the **Address** and click **Send as draft**. 3RD shows **Draft created in WordPress** when it's done.

**3. Review it in WordPress**

Open **Posts** (or the post type you chose) in WordPress. The new item is marked **Draft**.

Pushing the same article again updates the **same draft** instead of creating a new one, so you can keep editing in 3RD and push again. If the draft was deleted or moved to the trash in WordPress, 3RD makes a new one.

## Drafts only

3RD only ever creates or updates **drafts**. It never publishes, and never deletes anything on your site.

Once a post is published, scheduled, made private or sent for review in WordPress, 3RD leaves it alone. Pushing that article again shows a message asking you to edit it in WordPress.

## Disconnect

Open the **⋯** menu in the WordPress row and click **Disconnect**. 3RD stops sending anything to WordPress and deletes the details it stored. Drafts already in WordPress stay where they are.

To shut off access from the WordPress side too, revoke the `3RD` application password in your WordPress profile. The next time 3RD tries to reach your site, the row shows **Reconnect needed**.

## Troubleshooting

| You see | What to do |
| - | - |
| **WordPress did not accept this username and application password** | Check the username and paste the application password again. Use the application password, not your login password. |
| **WordPress did not receive a login** | Check the username and application password. If they are right, your server removes the login header before WordPress sees it. Follow the **see how to fix it** link in the message. |
| **Application passwords are turned off on this site** | Your host or a security plugin turned them off. Ask the site admin to allow application passwords. |
| **Your site blocks WordPress's API for outside apps** | Often a security plugin. Ask the site admin to allow the REST API. |
| **This account can't write posts and upload images** | Connect an **Author**, **Editor** or **Administrator** account. |
| **This address forwards to a different one** | Enter the address your site opens at in a browser. |
| **WordPress only allows application passwords over https** | Enter your site's address starting with `https://`. |
| **The connected account can't create any post type 3RD can save drafts to** | Reconnect with an **Author**, **Editor** or **Administrator** account. |
| A message that the piece was already published, scheduled or sent for review | Edit the post in WordPress. 3RD doesn't change it. |
