# Citation Share

> Citation Share is the slice of AI-answer citations that point to domains you own — the part of your AI visibility you most directly control.

**Citation Share** measures how often the sources behind an AI answer are *your* pages. Where Visibility asks "did it name me?", Citation Share asks "did it learn from me?" — and that's something you can influence directly with content.

## How it's calculated

```text theme={null}
Citation Share = (citations to your owned pages ÷ total citations) × 100
```

Every cited URL is classified as **Owned** (your registered domain, including subdomains like `blog.acme.com`) or **Earned** (a third-party site). See [Owned vs. Earned citations](/results/owned-vs-earned).

## Why it matters

Models increasingly ground answers in cited sources. If your pages are the source, you shape how the answer is written — not just whether you're named.

<Note>
  High citation share is a **leading indicator**: it often rises before visibility does. If your pages start getting cited this month, expect mentions to follow.
</Note>

## How to improve it

* **Publish authoritative, well-structured pages** for your Must-Win topics.
* **Make those pages easy to extract and quote** — clear definitive statements, FAQs, structured data. See [Content](/drivers/content).
* **Close coverage gaps** where competitors' pages are being cited and yours don't exist.
